Hot tub pH tells you whether the water is too acidic, too alkaline or sitting in the useful middle ground. It affects bather comfort, the way your sanitiser works and the parts that keep the spa running.
The awkward bit is that pH does not behave on its own. Total alkalinity, the water from your tap, chemical doses, air from the jets and the number of people using the spa can all move the reading. That is why adding more pH increaser or decreaser every time a test strip looks odd can turn water care into chemical ping-pong.

What should hot tub pH be?
For many domestic hot tubs, a practical target is pH 7.2 to 7.6. The British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association, known as BISHTA, publishes a wider domestic operating range of 7.0 to 7.6 in its water-treatment guidance.
Those figures are useful, but your hot tub manual and the labels on your water-care products take priority. Some systems specify a slightly different working range. Aim for the middle of the range recommended for your spa rather than treating the boundary as a daily target.
On the pH scale, 7 is neutral. A reading below 7 is acidic and one above 7 is alkaline. The scale is logarithmic, so a movement of one whole number is much larger than it looks. In a hot tub, a change from 7.4 to 8.0 is not a tiny cosmetic wobble.

Why does hot tub pH matter?
A hot tub holds a relatively small volume of warm water and places it under a heavy load. A few bathers, a little body lotion and an hour of aeration can have a more noticeable effect than they would in a swimming pool. Keeping pH in range helps the rest of the water-care routine do its job.

As pH rises, chlorine becomes less effective at controlling microbes. That can leave an owner adding more chlorine to chase a sanitiser reading while the underlying pH problem remains. It affects comfort
Water at either extreme can irritate eyes and skin. Low pH does not automatically feel gentle because it is acidic, and high pH is not safer because it sounds alkaline. A clear appearance does not prove the water is balanced.
It affects the spa itself
Persistently low pH can encourage corrosion of metal parts and damage vulnerable components. High pH increases the risk of scale, cloudy water and deposits on the shell, heater and filter. Water hardness also affects scale, so pH is one part of the picture rather than the sole culprit.
Hot tub pH and total alkalinity... what is the difference?
pH is the current acid or alkaline reading. Total alkalinity is the water's resistance to sudden pH change. Think of pH as where the car is pointing and alkalinity as how twitchy the steering feels.
When total alkalinity is too low, pH can swing up and down after small additions or a busy bathing session. When alkalinity is too high, pH may resist correction and keep drifting upwards. That is why repeated pH adjustments often fail until alkalinity is checked.

What happens when hot tub pH is too high?
High pH means the water is more alkaline than the recommended range. You may notice:
- cloudy or dull-looking water;
- white or rough scale around the waterline, jets or heater;
- a sanitiser reading that is present but not working as expected;
- dry, itchy or irritated skin and eyes;
- a rough feel on the acrylic or fittings.
Not every high reading creates visible symptoms straight away. Test results matter more than waiting for the shell to look like the inside of a well-used kettle.
Why does hot tub pH keep rising?
One common cause is high total alkalinity. It can hold pH upwards and make a normal dose of pH decreaser seem ineffective. Other possible causes include:
- fill water that starts with high pH or alkalinity;
- frequent topping-up with the same source water;

Low pH means the water is more acidic than the recommended range. Possible signs include:
- eye or skin irritation;
- corrosion or discolouration on metal parts;
- damage to vulnerable seals, heater components or fittings over time;
- pH readings that bounce around when total alkalinity is also low;
- sanitiser being used faster than expected in some systems.
The water may still look bright and clear. Do not use appearance as a substitute for a test.
Why does hot tub pH keep falling?
Low total alkalinity is often behind unstable or falling pH. The water has too little buffering capacity, so small chemical and bather inputs have a larger effect. Other causes can include:
- acidic fill water;
- too much pH decreaser;
- the cumulative effect of some sanitiser or shock products;
- heavy use and organic contamination;
- old water carrying a growing concentration of dissolved material.

How to test hot tub pH accurately
Test strips are convenient, but the result is only as good as the sample and timing. A tablet or liquid reagent kit can provide a useful second check, while a suitable photometer offers greater precision when used correctly.
- Use an in-date test product. Keep strips dry, close the container promptly and never reach in with wet fingers.
- Circulate the water first. Take the sample away from a return jet, floating dispenser or freshly treated area.
- Follow the stated dip and read time. Waiting longer does not make a strip more accurate. It can change the colours.
- Read it in good neutral light. Strong coloured garden lighting can make close shades hard to judge.
- Check pH, alkalinity and sanitiser together. One number rarely tells the whole story.
If two fresh strips disagree, confirm the result with another approved method or ask a hot tub dealer to test a sample. Do not average two doubtful readings and hope for the best.
How to adjust hot tub pH safely
Use a pH increaser to raise a low reading and a pH decreaser to lower a high one, but only when those products are approved for your hot tub and water-care system. The correct dose depends on the product strength and the actual volume of water, so a universal number would be misleading.

- Stop bathing. Do not use the spa while pH or sanitiser is outside the range stated by the manufacturer.
- Test pH and total alkalinity. If alkalinity is outside its recommended range, correct it first unless your manual says otherwise.
- Confirm the water volume. Use the filled volume stated for the spa, not an estimate based on the cabinet dimensions.
- Measure a small label-directed dose. More is not faster if it sends the reading past the target.
- Add the product exactly as directed. Keep the cover open during treatment, circulate the water as instructed and add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals.
- Wait for the stated mixing time and retest. The label may require a specific circulation period before the result is meaningful.
- Repeat in small steps if needed. Never mix chemicals together or combine products in a scoop or container.

What if hot tub pH will not stay balanced?
A reading that returns to the same problem every day is a clue. Work through the cause instead of increasing the dose.
- Check total alkalinity: high alkalinity can pull pH upwards, while low alkalinity allows it to swing.
- Test the fill water: knowing its starting pH and alkalinity helps explain what happens after a refill or top-up.
- Check your method: expired strips, damp pads, poor lighting and incorrect read times can create a problem that exists only on the chart.
- Review recent doses: write down what was added and when. Accidental double-dosing is surprisingly easy.
- Consider water age: older, heavily used water can become harder to manage.
- Look at aeration: long periods with air controls running can drive pH upwards even when the water began in range.
